Founded in November 1997, CoMA East Midlands explores and has fun with new and experimental music. At least half of the great music we play comes from composers in the ensemble. We welcome players of any instrument (including voice) and all standards – the only prerequisite would be knowledge of musical notation. Composers are welcome to approach us with new music and to come and participate in or observe the ensemble.
As well as playing music we have CoMA Inspires, a discussion group for composers which meets online. Let us know if you would like to join the discussion.
Led by our musical Director, Antony Clare, CoMA East Midlands continues to explore new musical ideas. to experiment and explore with themed concerts.
Recent and past projects and events:
A celebration of Nottingham’s lace-making heritage in music, words and images. In partnership with composer with composer Matthew Gilley and artist Katy Gillam-Hull and Nottingham City Libraries we presented workshops, art and music exploring ideas of craft, industry and music and their connections with Nottingham’s history. This was part of CoMA’s Festival of Contemporary Music in March 2026.
This project paired upcoming composers with ensembles to produce new work both by and for the ensembles. We really enjoyed working with Uri Agnon, alongside CoMA Sheffield, to develop new compositions. The results of this project were premiered in Nottingham in May 2025, performed other CoMA Bespoke groups and composers, in June 2025 in London. More about CoMA Bespoke and Uri Agnon.
Themed Concerts with our previous musical Director Joe Davies:
Recordings from our online workshops and concerts made in Lockdown can be heard on YouTube.
As well as staging our own showcase concerts every year, we enjoy collaborating with others. Collaborations include:
Previously we have played at CBSO Centre, Birmingham Conservatoire, the Wirksworth Festival, Nottingham’s Café Scientifique and the Brewhouse Arts Centre (Burton-upon-Trent).

We meet at the Lowdham Women’s Institute (WI) Hall, Main Street, Lowdham, NG14 7AB
The WI hall is on the opposite side of the road to the Magna Charta pub. The pub is on a corner so make sure you are on Main Street. There is parking at the Hall. There is a bus stop (“War Memorial”) around the corner with half-hourly connections to Nottingham using the number 26 bus (and others), and Lowdham train station is about five minutes walk.
Please do not confuse the WI Hall with Lowdham Village Hall which is also on Main Street.
Rehearsals are on Sundays: 1:30 to 3:30pm. We meet monthly, usually on the second Sunday of each month. Please arrive in good time to be ready to play at 1:30 pm.
