COMA London is an ensemble of strings, woodwind, brass, piano and percussion. The players are of mixed ability, some of a very high standard. There is a very friendly, supportive atmosphere, and we welcome new members on any instrument at any level, but not total beginners.
Our aim is to play music of high quality which is accessible to amateur players, whether it is written by established composers, students, or by COMA members. We work towards concerts - about 5 concerts a year, and often work with the composers. In past years we have collaborated with the Royal Academy of Music through COMA's Open Score Project, and students have written pieces for us. This year we will be performing works from a wider Call for Pieces.
We sometimes have evenings when members have the opportunity to try out some compositional ideas with the ensemble. We performed at the Spitalfields Festival for 7 consecutive years, and at the bmic Cutting Edge series for 3 consecutive years. We often take part in other Festivals around the country, and run workshops for Allcomers which culminate with a concert at the end of the day.
All ensemble members are required to be members of CoMA, and to pay a subscription to the ensemble for each project to cover the costs of rehearsals and concerts.
