Based on the four temperaments, the piece moves through each one in turn (melancholic, sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic). Similar material is repeated (transformed) in the different moods, which are related to particular thoughts noted at the start of each section – most of which relate to the state of the nation.
First Performance: CoMA Summer School 2003.
Four parts plus optional snare with a large ensemble.
Solo parts and speaking
Most of the piece should be simple to play if conducted. Solos can be played if a part is too difficult for the whole group playing a part. Part 3 is notated in alto clef – it could be changed if required.
