About the work

The piece was commissioned to celebrate the Tall Ships Race in Shetland during 1999. It is based on a melody in the style of a traditional slow air which transforms itself during the work and depicts various sea scapes from raging storms and surging swells to mysterious, fog-shrouded still waters. The text, by Jonathan Lennox, describes sailors and their vessels battling against the elements, but also explores the beauty and wonders found in the deep oceans.

First Performance: Lerwick Choral Society, May 1999
