About the work

Constellations is based on the painting by Joan Miró called ‘ciphers and constellations in love with a woman’. What struck me about this work was the way that the painter manages to create coherence with very sparse materials. Red and black dots are scattered across the canvas, often joined by thin lines. My response to this was to create a piece in which clefs are removed. All the players read in their own clefs and at their own transpositions. The result is that a single note on the stave can create a large texture of sound, which varies depending on the size of the ensemble. This small idea is therefore transformed into a unifying concept for the whole piece.
