About the work
Expurgus is the ancient latin word for the religious act of expurgation. And, “to expurgate” means ‘to cleanse of something morally harmful, offensive, or erroneous’. This piece is the sonorous representation of this beautiful act of morally cleansing oneself of one’s sufferings, of one’s sins.
In this work, the ensemble is the representation of people’s praying. The praying for redemption, expurgating themselves from their sufferings. Each voice in the ensemble has its own pace and expression much like a group of people praying.
The piano here represents the redemption of faith, solemnly conceding forgiveness; and the solo flutes represent the voices of heaven, like angels opening their ears to the confessions of people.
