About the work

The piece was written in August 1999 at the request of Jeanette Hajncl. At the time the concuding phase of East Timors struggle for independence was taking place, in the face of brutal repression. The piece represents a response to that struggle.

Technical notes

The recorder player will need tenor, treble, descant, and sopranino recorders. They will need to play overblown multiphonics in the first movement. The piano player has some fast rhythms in the first movement, and wide skips and fast repeated chords in the third.
