About the work

The piece is a setting of three uncollected poems by Wendy Cope, and the titles of the three movements are ‘Entomological’, ‘Arboreal’, and ‘Sartorial’. It was written for Lisa, Emily, Jess, Gwyn, Dorry, Jon and Will – students at Alton College, for performance at Farnham Castle during the March 1999 Farnham Festival.

Technical notes

The work is intended to be performed with the instrumentalists sharing the role of reciter. For shy, tongue-tied instrumentalists, it ought to be possible for the reciter part to be performed by a reciter, but the composer feels that this will not prove as effective.
