Technical notes
n section B, a piano is used as an instrument for improvisation in a percussive style. Initially the pianist plays the instrument as if it were a collection of different percussion instruments physically connected. The second performance direction omits the use of the keys, to encourage the player to approach the improvisation in a similar way as a percussionist, and to explore other areas of the instrument, particularly the inside of the piano, so as to yield different and unusual tones.
