About the work

The Hadal Zone, also known as the trench or hadopelagic Zone, is the deepest part of the ocean.  With no sunlight and very high pressure (over 1.100 standard atmosphere) living conditions are very hostile and only a few species have adapted to living there.  These creatures don’t have any pigment for colour and have reduced eyesight.  Life is sustained by chemical reactions around thermal vents.  Hadal is from the Greek word ‘Hades’ which means ‘unseen’.

First performed by CoMA London Ensemble on 22nd March 2011 and shortlisted for a BASCA Composer Award 2011
