About the work
The idea for this piece is one of walking through a large unfamiliar house and looking briefly into different rooms. Each room has its own special atmosphere resulting from the objects in the room or the particular events that have taken place in them. Some rooms are peaceful while others are busy and unsettled. Some are shadowy and filled with sadness while others are sunny with an atmosphere of exuberance.
First Performance: Bingham String Quartet recital, 1996, CoMA Summer School
Technical notes
Comfortable range for each instrument. Straightforward double-stopping for cello. A number of time-signature and tempi changes. Occasional bars of 3 against 2, and 5/8 against 3/4 occurs at the end. Some unexpected harmonies and mood changes. Romantic in parts but this is dispelled by a somewhat tense and straining harmony in places.
