About the work

Kaleidoscopes create complex, symmetrical patterns through reflective and fractal processes with an almost infinite number of possible variations. A key property of fractals is their self-similar structure ie. the same pattern replicated at different ratios.

The entire piece is based around a simple four-note pattern (C-B-D-C) which is replicated at numerous structural levels. To maintain musical interest, a variety of procedures are applied to this basic material, reflecting the subtle variations of a kaleidoscope. As a result of the fractal properties of the four-note pattern, the overall structure of the piece is palindromic.
