La Tarantella

Read, Martin

About the work

Before writing La Tarantella I had two intentions in mind: i) we had just come back from a summer holiday where we had cycled from Vienna to Budapest. In Budapest we heard a great deal of traditional Eastern European music which had an irregular metre – yet sounded regular. My task was to write a piece with a constantly changing ‘plastic rhythm’; ii)I was also very interested in the harmony that would result when ALL instruments – including transposing instruments – play the same melody.
