About the work

The structure of this piece is inspired by the novel of the same name by Milorad Pavic, which is governed by two crosswords and can be read “across” or “down”, producing a different novel each time. Similarly the piece can be assembled in a number of ways, each presenting a different view into the landscape, as if from a different point in it or on its perimeter.

First Performance: Chris Long and Antony Clare, COMA East Midlands recital, Clarendon College, Nottingham, August 1997.

Technical notes

Open ended/ un-barred score. Rhythmically free; not difficult to play the notes but involves attentive interaction between the two players. Substantial element of performer freedom. Quiet and meditative throughout .
