About the work
Melancholy Processional unfolds inexorably through a series of melodic paragraphs of varying length, each one cued by the piano. These phrases are heterophonic – the players begin together each time, but proceed at their own pace thereafter, with added grace note embellishments as they see fit (rather in the manner of Gaelic psalm-singing in the Western Isles of Scotland). There is a brief foray into brighter territory about two-thirds of the way through, but the piece ultimately winds down to the sombre manner of its opening.
