About the work

Originally written for Wind Quintet and drawing on elements of the Baroque period such as counterpoint, “Ode to Woe” is based on the inevitable nature of the emotion of sadness. In the spirit of this theme, the central motif serves as the feeling of sadness, appearing periodically throughout the piece with the modulated sections offering a brief antidote of hope. The piece can be seen to resemble an almost song style pattern through its seeming verse/chorus/middle 8 structure before eventually resolving back to the initial opening motif symbolizing the often-cyclical nature of sadness and hope that one may feel.
