About the work

This short piece was written in Mostar, Bosnia in early summer 1995. Although it is in no way programmatic, I am aware that certain sounds of the city have their way, directly or indirectly, into the piece – cicadas, nightingales, churches, mosques and, now that a little electricity has returned, the sounds of Sevdalinka and techno music from the small cafes that have begun to open among the ruins. This is an atmospheric and sensitive work which creates a strong sense of time and place.
