About the work

The title of the piece comes from a well-known Estonian children’s song the text of which was written by Ellen Niit, an Estonian author famous for her captivating stories and poems for children. It tells the tale of a duck who was driving a train and fell asleep on the way. While writing this piece for CoMA I had a vivid image from that song accompanying the process – therefore it felt right to borrow the title from Ellen Niit. It literally means ‘the duck was driving the train’, and knowing the story, as almost every Estonian does, it should not be difficult to understand what the piece is about.

First performance: DJ Hall, Royal Academy of Music, March 2009 by CoMA London Ensemble conducted by Paul Burnell
