About the work

The piece was composed under the CoMA Composer Mentor Scheme under the guidance of Michael Finnissy. It uses text from various sources, and is headed by a quotation from Jacques Monod: “The universe was not pregnant with life nor the biosphere with man. Our number came up in the Monte Carlo game. Is it surprising that, like the person who has just made a million at the casino, we should feel strange and a little unreal?”

Technical notes

The piece may be played by ensembles of various sizes. Possible instrumental substitutions are shown in the score.
