About the work

Promenade takes its title from the five large sculptures by Anthony Caro (1996) of this name. They are steel constructions on display in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I have derived material and form from the contours and structure of the sculptures. This is the third in a series of pieces based on Caro’s work. The previous two versions were written for large orchestra and a small instrumental ensemble.

Technical notes

The piece is in 15 parts, with preferred instruments stated, but each part can be played by a variety of instruments. Some bars are ‘sensa misura, with the conductor indicating the start of each bar and judging its length.
