About the work

Promenade takes its title from the five large sculptures by Anthony Caro (1996) of this name. They are steel constructions on display in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I have derived material and form from the contours and structure of the sculptures. This is the third in a series of pieces based on Caro’s work. The previous two versions were written for large orchestra and a small instrumental ensemble. First performed at the CoMA Summer School 2000, and by the Prommer’s Ensemble at the Royal Albert Hall in August 2000.

Technical notes

The four instrumental lines can be played by the following instruments, as long as good balance is ensured: 1 – flute, oboe, violin; 2 – clarinet, violin, trumpet ; 3 – horn, viola; 4 – bassoon, trombone, cello. There are isolated boxed notes which may be played by double basses or tubas an octave lower, or by timpani or trombones.
