Scherzo
Stafford, Simeon
About the work
Simeon Stafford is a painter and composer, and both his music and painting have followed similar paths. After obsorbing technique and producing academically ‘correct’ pieces when younger, he has gradually abandoned this in favour of a more free style of expression. In his painting this has led to a concentration on colour for its own sake and in his music to lpieces relating music to colour and the feelings inspired by colours.
Formal concepts such as sonata or variation form are still present in his music, but melodic lines are often deliberately truncated, mixed and sometimes abandoned altogether in favour of aleatoric sections or groups of notes which are selected by the performer before returning to the previous thematic material.
