Seascape
Conway, Edward
About the work
Although I don’t consider the piece to be programmatic in the strict sense, I had nevertheless originally intended it to be evocative of a particular time and place, on the Cornish coast. From quite early on in its planning however the sound of foghorns, which I was haunted by at night as a child, came to be the dominant musical image. From this falling interval which starts the piece the whole tonal world of the work is developed.
Technical notes
The piece can also be played by a variety of other woodwind quartets, or by string quartet, or by a small mixed ensemble.
