Shapes and Directions

About the work
This piece aims to have a rhythmic drive throughout, whilst also exploring contrasting shapes. The opening harmonic and rhythmic unison is followed by varying patterns of contrapuntal texture, exploiting parallel and convergent or divergent movement between the voices. In the last section, a quick succession of block shifts in harmonic direction is applied to the opening chordal material. The reference to shapes is felt both in the rhythms, which bounce between two beat and three beat units, and in the musical lines which are often jagged.
