About the work
Soliloquy, &c. was written as a response to CoMA’s Call for Scores in May 2013. Whilst the required instrumental forces (standard CoMA ensemble plus solo cello) initially suggested a piece in the concerto format, over time the instrumental combinations became separated in my mind, until in the finished piece the soloist and ensemble frequently ‘speak’ in alternation rather than conjunction.
A long monologue for cello solo opens the work, and the instrument itself provides a kind of focal point to the piece as a whole; we see it singing, conversing, muttering, and follow it as it dances, troops and stutters. The ensemble throughout is a largely impassive ‘observer’ to these gesticulations, speaking rarely, most notably in two darkly powerful utterances near the centre and ending of the work.
