About the work

Spa Towns of Central England is a set of three contrasting pieces, which I composed in the spring of 2006. The work was commissioned by CoMA for their Open Score project and was given its first performance at the CoMA Summer School at Doncaster College on 28 July 2006. The scoring is for solo piano and an ensemble of unspecified pitch instruments and the total duration is around 9 minutes. In October 2009 I made some small revisions to the third movement.

Spa Towns of Central England is dedicated to composer Joe Cutler and viola player Rose Redgrave on the occasion of their wedding in the summer of 2006. Both Joe’s woodwind duet Border Towns of Central Europe and the fact that Joe and Rose were living in Leamington Spa at the time provided the reference points for my title.

Technical notes

The work should be conducted but could be performed with the pianist directing from the keyboard. The pianist plays from the full score.
