About the work

This piece is based on Vanessa Bell’s painting Studland Beach. A solo instrument depicts the mysterious standing figure. The music of the ensemble passages draws on other qualities of the painting: its bold composition; its use of colour; the beach as the setting and the feeling of unease. I wanted to capture the sense of a narrative that remains elusive.
