About the work

The title is taken from the Yeats poem ‘The Second Coming’, which inspired a spatially conceived piece, where four soloists, positioned at four corners of the ensemble, pass a melody around the centre. The melodic thread develops with changes of timbre, contrapuntal lines breaking off, until eventually all four soloists come together again in a four-part chorale which leads to the climax. The ensemble creates an orchestral texture of bristling movement. By the climax, the ensemble becomes fixed upon frenetic repetition of a texture before collapsing to leave the soloists’ thread to drift off.

Technical notes

If possible the soloists should be positioned in surrounding balconies if available
