About the work

These three short pieces – Stormy Weather, We are such stuff, Where the bee sucks – are derived from lyrics in The Tempest. They attempt to explore the sense of these lyrics alone, and in the context of the play.

First Performance: Spring 2000, Summerville College, Oxford, by Jeanette Hajncl.

Technical notes

The piano part needs to be played so that it doesn’t drown out the recorder (which holds all the melodies). Therefore the piano dynamic markings should be regarded as subject to this caveat. The first piece requires a tenor recorder, the second a descant, and the third a treble and sopranino.
