About the work
Thule Ulitima is a Roman word for the most distant regions, remote and foreign territories. This work explores a few foreign territories and distant regions of the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn and along the way discivers a few unusual sounds. It was commissioned in 1999 for the Chamber Music Exchange by Thalia Myers.
All instruments play only with reeds and nouthpieces, except for the last note of the piece. Different sounds are produced by grasping the end of the reed or mouthpiece with the free hand.
