About the work
In the 17th and 18th centuries, tombeaux were written to commemorate the passing of a notable individual. The mood of these pieces was ceremonial and restrained, as opposed to the expressivity of the Italian lamento, and traditional features included descending scales, dotted rhythms and repeated notes. This piece takes those features and reimagines them in a contemporary context.
