About the work
The main impetus in this piece was to create a driving piece of unison playing. The figures introduced in the unison passage are then jumbled-up and turn into rather mechanistic figures over which a more lyrical melody is developed. The piece has been described as sounding like music for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ (a 1980’s computer game).
First Performance: London Chamber Group, Dec 1996, BMIC, and Nov 1998, Conway Hall
Quite difficult. Horn parts high in places, but should lie ‘under the fingers’ for most instruments most of the time. Slow introduction – flute should not feel bound by the notated rhythms. Extended unison passage – clarinet could lead here. Final section – try to keep to indicated tempo.
