About the work

As befits a Vocalise, the voice has the most prominent part. However, the piece can also be seen very much as a Trio with the parts having melodic interest.

First Performance: Cornelius Cardew Ensemble, Summer School 1998, Bretton Hall

Technical notes

In line with the title, the voice has the most demanding part. The flute has, for much of the piece, the role of playing a duet with the voice. The cello provides the ostinato rhythmic basis of the piece. The piece should be approached in a “classical” manner with not too much rubato.
