About the work

The piece was written as an exploration of extended techniques. The second movement takes the form of a slow dance, which extends ideas set out in the first movement, eventually fragmenting to the point of disappearance.

First Performance: 1st movement – Bingham Quartet, Bretton Hall, July 1996

2nd movement – Schidlof Quartet, St Mary’s C

Technical notes

The piece focusses particularly upon extended playing techniques, and both movements are based upon similar melodic material. The first movement is fast and energetic, the second slower, becoming increasingly fragmented.
