Philip Thomas, professor of Music and Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, introduces John Cage’s ‘Concert for Piano and Orchestra’, explaining the historical circumstances for the piece and its notorious and riotous first performance, and discussing the music itself: how to play the techniques, how to prepare a part, and how to perform it as an ensemble. Philip will work with individual instrumentalists as well as with the group as a whole. Philip will also introduce the interactive apps which explore Cage’s unusual notations and different ways in which the ‘Concert…’ may be heard
