Advent

Burke, Paul

About the work

Advent, written in November 2009 for the CoMA London ensemble, is an ‘open score’ piece; precise instrumentation is left to the conductor and players, meaning that it can be performed by ensembles of varying size and line-up.

The piece consists of alternations between the soloist – who makes a series of forceful melodic statements – and the ensemble, which often digresses from this material. These alternations culminate in a final tutti statement, which combines with bell sounds in the piano and percussion to create an atmosphere of ritual or ceremony.
