Against the Tide is intended to represent the dystopian chaos of today’s world; the disconnectedness and loudness but also the moments of beauty in community, cooperation and togetherness.
There is beauty in committing to, experimenting with and expressing oneself creatively at any level. We can experience connectedness in experiencing and partaking in collective sound-making which goes to the fundamental heart of us as humans. There is bravery in doing something, together, outside of mass consumption, because we can. There is community formed in the vulnerability of trying something strange and new to us.
There are things which sounds can teach us. That varying rhythms and pitches, different; in direct competition for dominance; can find ways to co-exist, complements and grow.
This piece is written for four-part open score with piano, and audience participation. The first movement uses different techniques as part of a graphic score, contrasting with the second more rhythmic movement, and the calm third movement.
