An Easy, Troublefree Life

Burnell, Paul

About the work

I think it was by looking in the dictionary under ‘Riley’ that I came up with the title for this piece (as in a definition of ‘A Life of Riley’). The style of the piece is reminiscent of the earlier work of Terry Riley (‘In C’, ‘Olson III’ etc.) but made suitable for keyboard players of mixed ability.

Technical notes

Some complex rhythms and time-signature changes. May be difficult to maintain steady tempo. Notation is specific as to dynamics and phrasing. May be played on any keyboard but not with sustaining sounds (eg not organ). Influenced by Terry Riley (In C, Olson III)
