About the work

This graphic text score is part of our immediate pieces anthology of works that are performance-ready with just an hour of rehearsal.

The score for Bleakish Thud was created by taking selections of text from Christian mystic Julian of Norwich’s text Revelations of Divine Love, and processing them in a number of ways. The selected quotations were either left wholly intact, or were transformed into new phrases using a process of sigilisation.

The quotes and transformed phrases have also undergone transformation into musical pitches using a table of correspondence that allows letters to be translated into pitches. The unedited quotes, sigilised phrases, and tone rows were then mixed together and written across a sheet of paper to create an improvised drawing.

This work, in the production of the score and in the method of score interpretation by performers seeks to platform the process of intuition, viewing intuition as a critical tool.
