Convergence 1

Hughes, Rob

About the work

Designed not to be rehearsed at all, this piece for any number of instrumentalists encourages performers to listen to each other. It is part of our immediate pieces anthology of works that are performance-ready with just an hour of rehearsal.

A group of performers will usually have an idea of how a piece will go before they get on stage to perform it, through extensive rehearsals and listening to recordings. This piece is a bit different. The players are not even allowed to look at what anyone else has on their part. They are only given a set of musical fragments, and some instructions. The rest is an experiment in listening and musical communication.

Convergence 1 should not be rehearsed as an ensemble, as it is designed to be played together for the first time in performance. Performers should not look at each other’s parts in advance, or discuss strategies for converging. Working it out during the performance is part of the piece! Performers should only look at and practice the part they have been allocated ahead of time.
