Crop Marks

Middleton, Anna

About the work

This piece is inspired by the phenomenon where, in periods of drought, the shapes and foundations of ancient buildings appear in fields, marked by the stunted growth of crops under which stonework lies buried. It is part of our immediate pieces anthology of works that are performance-ready with just an hour of rehearsal.

The score consists of three rings of notation for performers to interpret, focussing on listening and responding to the other members of the ensemble.

If you come from the countryside, or you’re particularly interested in history, you might have heard of the phenomenon where, in periods of drought, the shapes of ancient buildings appear in fields, marked by the stunted growth of crops where stonework still lies buried.

There’s something a little mystifying about it – how buildings, homes, the stories of whole families – their legacies are reduced to a simple shape in the ground, that only appears in certain weather conditions.

Thanks to climate change, these crop marks are appearing more consistently and allowing archaeologists to discover more about the people before us, ironically while we run the clock on our own existence.

How much of your life will be recorded and remembered in the future? What of our art will survive? Or will everything we know be reduced to ghosts in the dirt?
