The piece was inspired by a quotation from Hermes Trismegistus (13th Century BC). The piece is constructed from two elements, seven pitches whose fundamental is a drone on G, and a simple chant rhythm. Evolving slowly from the soft drone, the piece’s harmonic texture thickens until at a point of saturation rhythmic fracturing occurs.
The score is divided into six parts, each of which require a pair of instruments, one of which is sustaining. There are also parts for strings.
