Regarding the piece Free Standards dating from 2010, 2nd half, scored for solo violin and chamber orchestra, this is an attempt to present the act of becoming as a solid state rather than something “on the way”. Of course points of departure and arrival (one a transformation of the other) are denoted, defined, and as a point of reference for the “becoming”. The role of the solo violin is one of an orchestral section rather than a solo voice in dialogue with the orchestra. Here “becoming” interests me not just as a way but as a substance in its own right. This piece was written for Darragh Morgan and CoMA London. Chris Newman
First performance: St Leonard’s Church Shoreditch on 20th March 2012
Written for CoMA London and Darragh Morgan
