Gridwork I is a 3-part piece for any instrumental ensemble. It is part of our immediate pieces anthology of works that are performance-ready with just an hour of rehearsal.
This score provides space for creative play within an ensemble to create unique sounds. It features graphic semi-improvisational symbolic notation where pitch is indicated by the shape of the line, but what each line sounds like is up to the performers to decide.
The material for the piece is based on pitch-contours of speech recorded and analysed from a visual poem by Laurence Upton: Metrical Experiment #2, in which word loops scroll across the screen.
