Hawthorn Blossom

Bruges, Tom

About the work

This score is filled with choices for performers to make. It combines text to read aloud, music to play, and instructions to follow. The ensemble will turn through the pages of the score following the instructions, which results in a collage of mixed material which gradually changes throughout the piece until the final looped material which is faded out.

The piece was written whilst the composer studied in Oxford and depicts the move from Winter into Spring. In Oxford, May brings around the Hilary festival, where bells can be heard ringing out across the city.

There are twelve stanzas of poetry used throughout the piece, the first six describe a Winter scene whilst the final six are a repeat of the first but with the same animals and plants in a new Spring context: “spiny hawthorn” becomes “hawthorn blossom”.

The music calls upon players to perform independently and improvise, like a cacophony of birdsong. Some instructions ask the players to perform as soloists whilst others ask them to imitate and blend with their surroundings.
