Imaginary Orchestras

McGarr, Peter

About the work

The idea for ‘Imaginary Orchestras’ developed from an extract of A.S Byatt’s novel “Possession’: “I have never heard an orchestra. I have heard one or two ladylike harps and the fifes and drums at the Kermesse, but all these sublime sounds I read of, I have to imagine at best through the church organ.” (Sabine de Kercoz, Brittany, November 2nd 1859.)

Technical notes

Involves four groups of players, prepared piano, any minor technically difficult passages can be changed as long as the shape and atmosphere of the piece are maintained.
