About the work

This piece is a trio written for piano, percussion and a tenor/bass wind instrument.

From the composer:

“Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery through joining broken pieces with gold lacquer. Instead of hiding faults, it accentuates them and transforms imperfection into beauty. I wrote my piece of the same name, Kintsugi, to reflect the past struggle with my East Asian heritage. Exploring the aesthetics of Kintsugi, I found a far more nuanced cultural portrait than I had imagined. The art of Kintsugi gives dignity to what is scarred rather than being ashamed of it.

Over the past few years of writing for professional ensembles and soloists, I became increasingly keen on having my works performed by lay musicians, to bring new music to a wider community. Having listened to several Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) concerts, I became inspired to revise my piece Kintsugi for CoMA’s music library.”
