About the work

This text score is for any number of performers playing any instruments, singing, or using any form of noise. It is part of our immediate pieces anthology of works that are performance-ready with just an hour of rehearsal.

There is no one shape to the piece – this is determined by the performers in response to the particular location.  For example, the group might decide to travel together (each member at their own paces, preferably not marching) from point A to point B (via streets, alleyways, carparks, squares, etc.). Or the piece might take place at a more singular site (e.g. a large hall or open field) and performers play simultaneous (or solo/duo versions, etc.) versions of games such as hopscotch to determine movement while other performers make their way around the space.

Walking is understood here in the widest sense of kinds of movement suitable to progress along a public pavement.  The full or half turn of a wheel might be taken to be equivalent to a single stride of a leg. Decisions about left or right or both together could be determined according to a chance procedure or other method.  Likewise, Joystick movements for electric wheelchairs could be mapped to equivalent movement actions and therefore corresponding sound actions.

Movement and sound making could be separated out so that sound makers observe people moving through a space (e.g. a town square or lobby area) each choosing different people passing through the space as ‘triggers’ for their higher or lower sounds, etc.

Ways of making sounds should be portable, so voices and small instruments like harmonicas are more readily adaptable to the piece than say a double bass which might require some planning ahead if it is to be used in a performance.

The more creative the response the better.
