Rubbish in Space is a piece which explores different textures, using micropolyphony and has been written for at least seven musicians of any pitched instrument. The piece opens with the entire ensemble playing the same pitch. However, as it develops, these pitches drift away from each other creating denser cluster chords as well as sparser textures resulting in a sense of space. The staccato fragments are a more direct representation of the ‘rubbish’ element of this piece, with the ultimate inspiration being drawn from the impact that humans have on the planet. One of the main reasons for writing this piece was to be able to explore micropolyphony; especially exploring how this would work in an open score format.
This piece is written for at least seven instrumentalists, and parts should be doubled if there are more than seven performers. Each instrument should be able to produce specific pitches. Each performer should pick the part which best suits the range of their instrument. The parts are as follows:
High Part 1
High Part 2
High Part 3
Medium Part
Low Part 1
Low Part 2
Low Part 3
