Sappho’s Moon-night

Oates, Janet

About the work

Written for the CoMA Singers and the CoMA London Ensemble, and premiered in December 2023, Sappho’s Moon-night is a slow, spacious and evocative setting of a text which paraphrases and melds several fragments of poems by Sappho. The tuning forks provide not only a prominent A440 to tune to, but a background half-heard tone and percussive taps like unidentifiable night-time noises.

The text is written by the composer, based on fragments by Sappho:

The silver moon is down
the seven sisters lost
half the night is gone.
The hours flow on, flow on
I am alone.

The piece exists in two versions, depending on forces available:
• the first version is as premiered, with an instrumental ensemble taking the tuning
fork parts
• the second version has minor adaptations, allowing the singers to perform the
tuning fork parts themselves.
